Help pets stay calm during fireworks
Firework displays can be fun, but many pets are frightened by loud bangs and flashes. Get ready for firework season by creating a quiet, safe home where your pet can feel calm and secure.

Step 1
Spend evenings together
Sitting quietly with your pet can reassure them that everything is OK. Reading or watching TV together can help them feel safe. If your cat explores outdoors, let them out during the day and keep them safely inside at night.
Small pets such as rabbits and guinea pigs can also be scared by fireworks. Consider moving them indoors to a shed, outhouse or unused garage. Bring them into the space for short periods for a few days beforehand, so they can get used to it.
Step 2
Close the curtains
Close your curtains when it gets dark to block out frightening firework flashes.
For rabbits and guinea pigs, you can partly cover their enclosure with blankets, but leave an area uncovered so they can look out if they want to.
Step 3
Make a den
Build a cosy den using sheets and blankets, furniture or a safe corner. Help your pet get used to their special space before firework season by tempting them in with toys and healthy treats.
Give small pets extra bedding to make their homes cosy. You can also create extra hiding places around your home. Clear spaces under chairs or on shelves, especially warm spots, and add blankets or towels.
Step 4
Play soothing music
Classical music may help calm dogs, while music can also cover distant bangs. Try Classic FM, which plays relaxing music especially for pets during firework season.
Step 4
Ignore the bangs
Try not to react when fireworks start. Pets can pick up on our behaviour and emotions, so staying calm can help show them they’re safe.
Getting extra help
If your pet is very afraid of fireworks, talk to your vet. They may suggest ‘pheromone diffusers’ (comforting smells) or, in some cases, medication to help your dog or cat stay calm.
Your vet may also refer you to an animal behaviourist, who can help train your pet to become less afraid.
