Make a wildlife rescue box

Want to be an animal hero? Make this wildlife rescue box! Think of it as your very own animal ambulance – that your grown-up can use to safely transport small sick or injured wild animals to your nearest vet. If we all step in to help wildlife, we’ll see more animals surviving and thriving.

What you will need

    important

  • A sturdy, medium sized box with a lid
  • Scissors
  • Old towels (one or two)
  • Thick gardening gloves (so your grown-up is protected from bites, scratches and illness when picking up animals)
  • optional

  • A long sleeve top (to protect your grown-ups arms from scratches)
  • A pair of garden clippers (in case you find a small animal tangled in litter, netting or brambles)

Warning

If you spot a sick or injured animal – don’t try to rescue them yourself, as this can be dangerous. Always tell your grown-up!

Instructions

  • 1 Draw a few small holes on all four sides of your box, and cut them out, so rescued animals can breathe. Be extra careful if you’re using sharp scissors!
  • 2 Add your towels to the bottom of the box, to help rescued animals stay warm and cosy.
  • 3 Add your gardening gloves, long sleeved top and clippers to the box, so your grown-up knows exactly where to find them.
  • 4 Congratulations! Your box is ready for its first rescue mission. Place it in your garage, shed, porch or car – so your grown-up can easily rescue sick or injured wild animals they spot in your garden, or out and about. They can find a guide on how to safely pick up and transport wildlife here.
  • rescue tip

We’d only ever ask your grown-up to save an animal if it’s safe. If you see an animal trapped on a clifftop, on train tracks, ice, water or another dangerous place – contact our expert rescuers.
