What’s on your pet’s Christmas list?

It isn’t just treats and toys (although we’ve not missed them off!) Count off the wishes on this list to keep your pet happy and healthy – all through the busy festive season.

  • 1 Healthy food. It’s hard for cats and dogs to resist tasty treats like mince pies, chocolate and chicken bones. But these foods can make them very ill indeed – so keep them safely out of the way. You can give them some skinless and cooked, boneless turkey meat but their normal food will help them feel at their best.
  • 2 Being cosy and warm. Pets feel the cold, too! Some dogs need special coats for winter walks. And all pets need their beds to be kept in a place that’s sheltered, warm and dry. Keep the cages of small furry animals away from drafty doors and windows.
  • 3 Chill out time. Christmas can be a busy time – and that can be stressful for pets. Make sure they have a safe, quiet space to spend time in – away from crowds and new people. Give cats extra hiding places by putting out cardboard boxes or blankets or towels in snug places.
  • 4 No costumes, thanks! Christmas outfits might look cute, but they can make pets feel uncomfortable and stressed. Most pets would rather rock their natural fur (though some cats and dogs wouldn’t mind wearing a fun bandana or ribbon on their collars).
  • 5 Toys and games. If you feel like giving your pet a special present, get them a safe toy to play with, or make a fun DIY game! Try putting treats in an empty toilet roll tube, folding the ends down, and giving it to your pet to play with.
  • 6 You! Your pet would love to spend Christmas curled up next to you as you watch movies, or to go out with you on a sunny, wintery walk. If your family is going away, take your pet with you, or make sure they're being looked after by someone else, as animals don’t like being left alone too long.
